Book: Mahseer (Tor spp.) fishes of the world: status, challenges and opportunities for conservation

Guest Of Honours

Steve Lockett is the Executive Director of the Mahseer Trust (UK), an organisation devoted to the scientific study and conservation of Tor mahseers — the iconic freshwater fishes of Asia. His work blends research, advocacy, and education outreach, bringing global attention to threatened river ecosystems and the species that define them.

A former musician, teacher, and photojournalist, Steve now leads the distribution of The Tiger of the River, a children’s book on mahseer conservation, across India in multiple local language editions. His commitment to river literacy and community engagement has made him a familiar figure along India’s major river systems.

Steve has contributed a chapter to a forthcoming HarperCollins India tribute to Romulus Whitaker, and is currently in discussions with the publisher for his memoir Beyond Sacred, reflecting on twenty-five years spent on India’s rivers — a journey of science, culture, and conservation
